Boston Medical Center, an essential hospital and Practice Greenhealth partner facility that has made sustainability and resilience a centerpiece of its mission, shows what accessing this funding can accomplish. Since 2011, BMC’s facility in Boston’s South End has lowered its energy use by about 35% and reduced carbon emissions from energy consumption by over 90%. BMC’s initiatives reduced the health system’s costs by $500 million over the last 10 years while expanding its capacity to serve patients.

In a unique partnership between Health Care Without Harm, America’s Essential Hospitals, and Oakwell, a pilot cohort of hospitals; including Practice Greenhealth partners Grady Memorial Hospital, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, and Jackson South Medical Center; is embarking on a journey to uncover decarbonization and resilience opportunities, and secure funding sources like the Inflation Reduction Act to drive significant change.

The new partnership will expand this work to a broader group of hospitals nationwide.
